Landscape and seascape painting have long been central themes in art, capturing the beauty and power of natural environments. Landscapes traditionally depict rural, urban, or imagined scenery, often emphasising colour, tone and composition to evoke emotion or a sense of place. From the pastoral scenes of the Dutch Golden Age to the expressive, light-filled works of the Impressionists, landscapes have reflected both the artist’s perspective and cultural attitudes toward nature. Seascapes, on the other hand, focus on the vastness and movement of water, exploring themes of tranquility or power. Artists such as J.M.W. Turner captured the ever-changing moods of the sea, from calm harbours to stormy waves. In modern and contemporary art, both landscapes and seascapes have expanded beyond traditional realism, incorporating abstraction and conceptual elements to address environmental concerns and human interaction with nature.
Although Landscape painting has continuously evolved, It remains a vital genre, reflecting cultural attitudes toward nature and the environment. In our upcoming exhibition ‘Between Land & Sea’ we explore this theme from multiple perspectives, with each artist bringing their own unique style and interpretation to the subject.
