Shepherd’s practice is the creation of their living, internal landscape. The artist is interested in the intimate, the handmade and the obsessional. Works in paint, sculpture and embroidery that aim to communicate a deeply personal relationship to the natural world. Using metaphor, symmetry and obsessive mark making they aim to understand their connection to what they perceive to be an animate world, using creative process as a means of communication with more than human forms of life. It also aims to break down temporal barriers and speak across time and space. There is a marked focus within Shepherd’s work upon femininity, matrilineal ancestry, gestation, and fertility. In this way, through their work they attempt to connect with those who have gone before, reaching back beyond the human to our animal, plant, and microbial ancestors.
