This painting is very close to Ghislaine’s heart, in just a few strokes, she has caught the immediacy of Cordelia’s movement as she turns to look up at her mother. This intimate study, painted at speed, catches all the innocence and vitality of early childhood. Goya’s poignant portrait of Manuel Osorio Manrique de Zuñiga in the Metropolitan Museum in New York has always been one of her favourite paintings and in many ways, not least her brilliant use of red, this is her homage to that iconic depiction of the fragility of youth.
